The Redfourth Academy Story

Philip Tuju Sijenyi aka Filah Tuju, fell in love with music at about the age of 12 after taking part in a Church Children’s Christmas Cantata. It was his first experience being exposed to a big vocal ensemble. It was the first time that he was introduced to the beauty of harmony. At that young age, this was a turning point. It was here that he decided to pursue music as a career.

Filah was admitted to Upper Hill School for his high school and here his skills in music creation were honed. He was top in his music class from form1 all the way to fourth form where he scored a straight A in Music. His desire to pursue music was so strong that he decided to apply to the world’s largest college of contemporary music, Berklee College of Music in Boston MA. He was eventually accepted to Berklee and awarded a partial scholarship. The remaining fees was however too high for him to meet and he sadly had to shelve his ambitions and think of a ‘plan B’.

Filah opted to study privately and sit for the ABRSM exams which he did well. He settled on studying music locally when he enrolled at Kenyatta University Music Department.

He however dropped out of KU due to challenges balancing between earning a living and paying fees.

Although his desire to pursue music had been paused, he purposed to help other aspiring musicians to get an opportunity to study contemporary music at a more affordable rate.

He decided to volunteer at his former high school while doing peripatetic teaching to earn a living.

In 2016, with the help of a loan from a former schoolmate, Filah founded the Redfourth Academy of Music and began training musicians in the music of today.

To date, Redfourth Academy of Music has trained of 2000 musicians and has also launched other departments and initiatives that have set apart the institution form others.

Filah Tuju eventually returned to school to pursue his undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Music and is determined to further his knowledge in music and the business of music as he and his team work on building one of the greatest music institutions in Africa and the world.

Redfourth Academy runs Redfourth Chorus which is the largest choral group in East Africa and Redfourth Butterfly, a training program for special needs students.
